Created in 1983 by master perfumer Serge Kalouguine, L'Ombre dans l'Eau is an avant-garde fragrance: it was one of the very first fruity-floral fragrances in perfumery. Its story begins with Dido Merwin, a close friend of the founding trio of Diptyque, who, after picking roses and blackcurrants, was delighted by this blend of scents. She confided this revelation to her friend Desmond Knox-Leet, who then imagined a fragrance that would exalt the union of blackcurrant and rose. Evoking "the scent of a green garden by the water", this perfume is like a pause by a quiet river where you fall asleep under a weeping willow. Roses and blackcurrant berries come together in one scent: the herbaceousness of blackcurrant leaves on one side, the fruity, tart accents and floral intensity of rose on the other. These same notes melt with the background of ambergris and musk that make the plant world addictive.

The brand was founded in 1961 by three singular personalities united by a strong aesthetic alchemy: Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, Yves Coueslant and Desmond Knox-Leet. Fed with a common passion for drawing, they start creating motifs for fabrics and wallpapers, and decide to open their first shop with two entrances (like a diptych) in Paris, Boulevard Saint Germain.
