This excerpt from Charles Hubert Millevoye's Elegies bears witness to the nobility associated with amber in classical Greece. Moreover, the Greeks called this raw material "éléctron", due to the electrostatic properties of amber discovered by Thales himself. Its ability to release electrons and transfer negative ions, when rubbed, makes amber an ideal solution for de-stressing, strengthening our immune system and facilitating sleep.
The word "amber", on the other hand, derives from the Arabic "anbar", which originally meant ambergris, aka the intestinal secretions of the sperm whale, a cetacean found in most of the world's oceans. This etymology inspired the Tola brand in the choice of the name for the Anbar fragrance: an ode to amber, embellished by several fruity (strawberry, orange, apple and plum) and spicy (cinnamon, carnation) notes.
Amber derives from the fossilization of coniferous resin and assumes shades that vary from yellow to brown, while maintaining a remarkable transparency. Compared to other stones, amber is tender and fragile and its light weight allows it to even float on the Baltic Sea! Among the Baltic peoples, the pieces of amber floating on the sea are associated to the tears and the fragments of submarine palace of Juraté, the Sirens’ goddess: she was punished for having taken away a beautiful sailor when she was already engaged to a god ...
In perfumery, amber corresponds to an accord of balsamic notes: vanilla, benzoin, labdanum, musk. To celebrate this accord, the New York based brand D.S. & Durga has just presented the Ambers fragrance duo. For Amber Teutonic, the perfumer David Seth Moltz imagined the alpine scents of the virgin fir forest where Malher composed his melodies about the Nibelunges. Amber Kiso, meanwhile, brings us to the sacred forest of Kiso, in Japan: the ceremony of katanas is accompanied by scents of incense and the leather evoking the bushi armor.
Discover below these two novelties as well as the rest of our selection of amber fragrances.
