Emmanuel Philip
Philip Emmanuel, from Grasse and son of a perfumer, he launched with his wife his own house perfumer: "PCA". He collaborates with Cire Trudon, Carrière Frères Industrie, David Mallet Le Salon, and many others.
What is your motto?
Emmanuel Philip : "Perfumer one day, creative always"
What is your oldest olfactory memory?
Emmanuel Philip : "It's the smell of the laboratory on clothes and my father’s leather briefcase (who was a perfumer) when he came home in the evening. A mixture of a variety of raw materials, fragrances of all kinds, which perfumed the whole room. Today is my turn when, at the end of the day, my 4 year-old son says, " Dad you smell weird"."
What is the story behind Carrière Frères ?
Emmanuel Philip : "Carrière Frères is the historical name of Cire Trudon’s heir. Its know how and its innovating products made of Carrière Freres a multi awarded factory especially during the Universal Exhibitions between 1867 and 1900.
The actual line is an echo to this period, the very beginning of the modern sciences and the botanical field."
Which candles are symbolic of the Herbarium and why?
Emmanuel Philip : "Orange Blossom and Jasmine are classics at Carrière Frères. These are typical scents of French perfumery.
New scents like ginger and thyme have recently made their appearance in the range. Classic and unusual scents come together in the range."
Is the process of creating a perfume for a candle different to that of an eau de toilette ?
Emmanuel Philip : "Yes, my approach to the creation of these two mediums is totally different with regard to the choice of raw materials, their compatibility and stability in the medium but also and especially the regulatory aspect being very different for a product in contact with the skin and one which is not."
What, according to you, are the differences between wax mades from vegetable oil and one from synthetic oil ?
Emmanuel Philip : "On the technical side, the differences are obvious. The two types of wax have very specific features. The olfactory result is more complex with plant-based wax , but the burning can be of higher quality when the product is well formulated. Synthetic bases are easier to work with, more stable over a long period and reproduce perfumes well."
What are your next olfactory projects?
Emmanuel Philip : "We are currently working with Carrière Frères on new scents for next year."
