MUSIC

The first element that the institute explored was the soundwave, we collaborated with various researchers (Musicians and composers) to bring their auditive perspectives on the project. Each of them was interacting on a research and a perfume to dialogue the piece of music accordingly , the aromatic notes were translated and readjusted to musical notes. Joseph Schiano di Lombo explored how the Belgiums blue flower blooming in the forest inspired perfume would sound through his Synthesiser, light between over the canopé and in between the trunk of the trees.

Cyrus Bayandor brought the mineral notes of Arco Spettro to life with Dallol landscape , the warmest place on earth, a volcano under a crust of a salt desert, a kaleidoscope of colour, his music is like a topographic flight view of Dallol with his two musical pieces Dallol pt.1 and pt. 2 and Erwan Sene uncovered the traces from past explosions in the hot springs area of Kyushu in Japan, place of fascination for fireworks, the scent Fosforo is for our ears to hear.

For the next 4 Perfumes, we collaborated with the musicians Buvette, Clement Varieras, Pilooski, and Pierre Rousseau in that very order. Their soundscapes can be streamed from our sound page before the release of their corresponding perfumes.

PACKAGING

The sensorial dimension has been explored and manifested on the packaging of the fragrances. The Hero bottle designed in collaboration with Jochen Holz, Is a vibrant colour flask that comes encased in a vegan cast glycerin soap that encapsulates olfactive memories, designed by Brian Thoreen in collaboration with Barnabé Fillion. The translucency frames the bottle as an olfactory archive awaiting to be unlocked from its frozen state. The packaging comes with a glass funnel to pass the perfume from the refill bottle on to the Hero, Adding a ritual moment of concentration and ensuring the freshness of the scent.

The Perfumes are protected by an archive book inspired box, Inside this deep green package is a soap that comes enclosed by a beautifully designed tray, When its cover is removed, the cutout silhouette on the back will allow the light to illuminate the colourful bottle and frame it on a dark green shade. Inside the box comes a print excerpt of Nathalie’s du Pasquier painting ‘A 3D Perfume’ commissioned by Arpa in 2019, Which is the cover of the musical piece of the perfume; On the back of this card you will find the link from which the music can be downloaded for amplifying the synesthetic experience.

We are committed to become a sustainable brand for such matters, we reduced the single use plastic as much as possible; The rigid box on which the perfume comes can have its insert easily separated to use the package for keeping cherished items and its book-like construction allows for a beautiful compliment to any bookshelf.

LOCATIONS

To further add to the diverse thinking and creativity needed to amplify the synesthetic experience, We have separated our Headquarters into research modules. In Paris the sound researchers collaborate directly with our founder and perfumer Barnabé Fillion on the exploration of frequencies and soundwaves. The Paris HQ is the perfume laboratory on which the dimensions of perfume are intersected to form our olfactive language. The Architectural renovation was commissioned to Jean-Phillipe Bonnefoi, The rooms are designed for sound and scent contemplation and amplification. From Mexico city we research the shape and form of perfume, the sculpture research team based in casa Mobius which functions as a temple for concrete appreciation, a space that has no clear beginning nor end, a brutalist masterpiece by Mexican architect Goméz Gallardo. From the institute in Kyoto the researchers will dive deep into the ceremonial approaches of incenses and tea. These diversity of locations allow us to explore from a systemic perspective the different layers of perfumery.
