Description

Composed by Bertrand Duchaufour, Series 3 – Incense Avignon is a woody incense fragrance built almost entirely around the material logic of church air. Olibanum gives the structure its cold resinous smoke, while elemi sharpens the opening with a lemony, peppered brightness. Cistus adds a darker ambered shadow, and aldehydes create the waxy, mineral lift of stone, candle and empty space. The result is not a warm oriental incense, but a dry, vertical composition where smoke, resin and air define the architecture. What distinguishes Avignon is its refusal of comfort. Incense is not used as a decorative trace or a soft spiritual effect: Duchaufour places it at the centre and strips the formula back to resin, cold stone, wax and tension. It suits those who want an austere incense fragrance with clarity, dryness and architectural depth. Launched in 2002 as part of Comme des Garçons Series 3: Incense, Avignon explores incense through the Catholic tradition. The reference to Avignon is precise: the city was tied to the papacy in the 14th century, and the perfume evokes the air of an old cathedral — cold stone, ancient wood, candle wax, solemn silence and incense smoke held in the walls.

Who is this for?

For those drawn to contemplative fragrances with a dry, mineral character that evoke the atmosphere of a sacred place rather than a single raw material.

Product frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Avignon opens with the cool mineral facets of frankincense, lifted by elemi and aldehydes. Cistus and woods deepen the composition, creating a dry, resinous trail of remarkable clarity.

Rather than recreating the smell of incense alone, Avignon captures the atmosphere of an ancient church. Cold stone, candle wax, aged wood, and resinous facets merge into a single olfactory impression.

Released as part of Comme des Garçons' Series 3: Incense, Avignon demonstrated that a fragrance could evoke an entire place and atmosphere—not just a raw material. It remains one of the most influential interpretations of atmospheric perfumery.

I know this is a great scent even though I never received it.

"We can find beautiful things unconsciously. A fragrance that could not exist in a bottle that should not exist. What qualifies what has the right to exist? Who has the right to decide what is to be rejected? Deliberately taking a vial that has been disqualified from existence and deliberately giving it the right to exist. " - Rei Kawakubo
