description
An olfactory masterpiece, the result of hundreds of tests, Portrait of a Lady has become a reference among the chypre fragrances of the perfume industry. With woody accents, it is a tribute to Henry James' novel of the same name, which features a young American woman facing her destiny with ardor. This fragrance describes a sophisticated woman who is not afraid to dare. Reflecting the personality of its wearer, it reveals a structure that is both diverse and harmonious. The warmth of cinnamon and clove and the fruity notes of raspberry and blackcurrant reveal a fiery heart of patchouli, Ylang-Ylang and an overdose of Turkish rose. This opulently dosed formula undoubtedly contains one of the major dosages of Turkish rose essence in perfumery: it would take nearly 400 flowers to create a 100ml bottle. The result is an extreme sweetness but full of character, where the rose blooms on a base of benzoin, sandalwood, musk, patchouli and incense. With 25 years of experience in the field of high perfumery and thanks to the freedom granted to him by Frédéric Malle, master perfumer Dominique Ropion presents here one of his major olfactory masterpieces, worthy of a thousand and one oriental nights.

Dominique Ropion is known for his mastery of balance in perfumery: he isolates each fragrant accord by elaborating his juices under a microscope, for a perfect dosage and a meticulously thought-out association with the other ingredients. With Portrait of a Lady, he signs a creation whose floral power surpasses us with its notes of Turkish rose. Its woody scents of benzoin and sandalwood mingle with the softness of the powdery facet of musk and the assertive character of patchouli and incense.

A beautiful fruity and spicy rose with an animalic and carnal effect in the background. The brightness of the rose and the light fruity notes are combined with the darker ambergris.

journalist opinion

"Some perfumes push the envelope so much that they seem hard to take on, intimidating as they are, ""too much"" something. This hypnotic creation by Dominique Ropion, overflowing with assumed femininity, is one of those. Everything is opulent, excessive, Everything is opulent, excessive, plethoric, starting with the huge amount of Turkish rose essence (2% in the formula). Whether we call it a modern oriental or a ""French oriental"" does not matter as this perfume knows how to exceed these olfactory codes. What counts, what remains is the radical force of the major agreement marrying for the best rose damescena and patchouli ""heart"" big, large, generous cleaned of its most unpleasant facets. The wake is irresistible and one of the most memorable of the market. This monument is one of those brazenly feminine perfumes that men wear beautifully."

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle

Coming from a famous family of artists, Frédéric Malle represents the third generation of perfume specialists. His grandfather, Serge Heftler-Louiche, was the founder of Parfums Christian Dior before handing over the position to his daughter, the mother of Frédéric Malle, who took the artistic direction. In order to relaunch the art of high perfumery, Frédéric Malle founded his brand in 2000 and offers carte blanche to the greatest perfumers of our time, that he had met during his 25 years of experience. Dominique Ropion, Jean-Claude Ellena and Olivia Giacobetti are some of the perfumeurs that have signed his olfactory creations.
