Maison Francis Kurkdjian

In this new episode of On Tour with Nose, go behind the scenes at Maison Francis Kurkdjian for an exceptional and intimate conversation with Marc Chaya, co-founder of the House.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian has been one of the brands accompanying Nose since the very beginning. Over the years, the relationship has grown far beyond a commercial partnership: a shared commitment to excellence, a common vision of the craft, and a mutual belief that niche perfumery is built over the long term.

The Birth of an Extraordinary House

Marc Chaya himself readily admits it: he entered this world not as a perfumery heir, but as a former finance professional with a technical background. Yet it was precisely this outsider’s perspective that allowed Maison Francis Kurkdjian to be conceived differently.

Thirteen years after its launch, the founding vision remains unchanged: to make fragrance a continuous experience, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A permanent olfactory presence, imagined as a true richness of experience.

Baccarat Rouge 540: A Breakthrough, Not a Strategy

“Our agenda was never to create something that would become a success,” Marc Chaya confides. The ambition lay elsewhere: to create a fragrance that had never existed before, to open up an olfactory territory that had barely been explored.

Eau de Parfum and Extrait: Two Interpretations of the Same Signature

Baccarat Rouge 540 was born from the collaboration between Maison Francis Kurkdjian and the crystal house Baccarat, in celebration of Baccarat’s 250th anniversary. Originally conceived as a limited edition, it quickly became an essential part of the House’s olfactory wardrobe.

The Eau de Parfum is built around what has now become a cult trio: hedione, ambroxan, and saffron. Hedione brings the transparency and delicacy of luminous jasmine. Ambroxan unfolds a powerful woody-amber signature, inspired by ambergris. Saffron cuts through the composition with its spicy facets, at once leathery and metallic. The result is a graphic signature, distilled to its purest form, with an enduring trail.

The Extrait de Parfum pushes the composition into its densest expression: cashmeran, ambroxan, jasmine grandiflorum, and saffron. Cashmeran replaces hedione, adding a warmer, velvety woody roundness. Jasmine grandiflorum absolute introduces a deeper, more sensual floral richness. The composition gains power, concentration, and intensity — without betraying the original inspiration.

Two expressions, one shared composition. Two ways of inhabiting the same olfactory imprint.

The Paradox of an Uncalculated Icon

What makes Baccarat Rouge 540 so fascinating from an editorial perspective is precisely its non-commercial origin. In a market where every launch is preceded by consumer studies, focus groups, and meticulously crafted marketing briefs, this fragrance was born from a purely creative intention. And perhaps that is exactly what explains its cult status: the fragrances that truly resonate are the ones that do not try too hard to please.

An Olfactory Wardrobe, Not a Catalogue

The philosophy of the House goes far beyond Baccarat Rouge 540. Marc Chaya insists on this point: Maison Francis Kurkdjian was conceived as a coherent collection, an olfactory wardrobe to be built over time.

Each fragrance has its own place, its own role, its own moment. The client is not invited to choose a perfume — but to create a personal olfactory universe.

A House Built to Last

Thirteen years after its founding, Maison Francis Kurkdjian continues to look toward the long term. ‘The House is here for hundreds of years to come,’ says Marc Chaya, with a conviction that sounds less like a slogan than a certainty.

New surprises are promised, at the right time, according to the House’s own rhythm. Without external pressure, without imposed calendars. A reminder that true creation cannot be scheduled — it is prepared quietly over time, before finding the perfect moment to exist.
