In this new episode of “Off With Nose,” Clara Molloy, creative director of Memo Paris, and perfumer Juliette Karagueuzoglou present Indian Leather — a fragrance that places oud at its core and deliberately takes the opposite approach to Middle Eastern tradition.
India as a destination
Memo Paris builds each fragrance around the connection between a destination and an olfactory composition. Indian Leather is born from India — its opulence, its colors. The elephant chosen for the design is not a decorative motif: it expresses something about the fragrance itself, its imposing character.
Oud at the heart of the composition
The central notes are oud, cypriol, and a leathery accord. But it is the way oud is treated that defines Indian Leather. Traditionally, Middle Eastern oud is layered with rose and deep amber woody notes — a dense, dark, opulent register. Here, Juliette takes the opposite direction.
Her formulation secret: to lighten oud without erasing it. Sinfoleide (a musk) stretches the fragrance and gives it air. Jasmine and indole bring a creamy, floral roundness to the heart. The oud remains present and powerful, but it breathes.
