Moonmilk

Moonmilk, literally 'moon milk', is a natural white and creamy substance that forms in certain limestone caves. The famous 16th-century Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner, founder of modern zoology and also a cave explorer, described it in 'Descriptio Montis Fracti sive Montis Pilati' (1555). He recounts his ascent of Mount Pilatus and his underground explorations: 'At night, the moon illuminates the cave so intensely that its light seems to take shape, like a mist. It settles on the ceiling, making the limestone stalactites shimmer and drip a white liquid into puddles that never dry.' This mineral and milky vision inspires a fragrance with silvery, fresh, and mysterious reflections, like light transforming into matter. A burst of lime emerges first, sharp and acidic, immediately warmed by the spicy bite of clove. Then the substance settles: dry cedar and fir balsam create a woody and mineral architecture, softened by lactones with a milky, almost creamy roundness. Finally, sandalwood unfolds its velvety depth, transforming this initial freshness into an enveloping and mysterious clarity, like the light of a moon filtered through stone.
