Citrus Family

In this new episode of Masternose, Nose explores a common source of confusion: the difference between a citrus fragrance and a cologne. While both families share citrus notes, they follow very different compositional principles.

Citrus Fragrance vs. Cologne: Same Citrus Notes, Two Different Structures

Both families have citrus at their core—but that is where the similarity ends. A cologne is built on an inverted pyramid, with a predominance of top and heart notes and very little emphasis on the base. It is designed to deliver an immediate freshness that is, by nature, fleeting.

A citrus fragrance, on the other hand, can develop rich and substantial base notes. While citrus remains the dominant theme, its structure can be as deep, complex, and long-lasting as that of any great perfume. It is not inherently a light format, but rather a fully-fledged olfactory family in its own right.
