Marc-Antoine Barrois goes on air
It was childhood memories that brought you and Quentin Bisch together: could you tell us more about how you met?
A friend introduced us in 2014 thinking we were made for each other which was immediately the case. When we started talking about perfume we had to find a common language because mine was drawing and sewing. Quentin then suggested that we exchange notes one by one. I trusted him and gave myself up with sincerity. This is probably what makes our relationship and our perfumes so authentic.
What is your first olfactory memory?
There are several. It started with the simple and delicate Toulouse violet that my mother used to perfume our baby clothes, and then the perfumes that made a lasting impression on me were those of my mentors, signature perfumes with a hold and a trail that reflected the perfumes we were trying to create.
What has been your biggest challenge since you decided to start working in perfume?
There are many challenges, starting with staying true to my values as the brand grows. We continue to manufacture 100% in France including the packaging, without cellophane and without endocrine disruptors.
Ganymede, B683... The planets seem to inspire you a lot. Could you tell us why?
It's not so much the planets as the invitation to discover/invent a new world that the planets represent. They are also references to mythology!
B683 is inspired by the asteroid in The Little Prince. What is your connection with this poetic work by Saint-Exupéry?
Beyond the poetry, which I think makes the world a better place, it's a wonderful book full of the values I cherish. Taking the time to be amazed, the time to tame a friend, the time to care for those we love despite their faults, even the time to listen to those who are different from us and think differently, which is something we need today.
Ganymede and its fresh leather are a huge success. How does it differ from classic leather fragrances?
Its unique signature, its minerality and its power. It's definitely our bestseller today.
Marc-Antoine Barrois originally specialised in made-to-measure haute couture. What is the link between your haute couture and perfume collections?
Refinement without a doubt. The time to think about each perfume in detail and in its subtleties. The care to choose incredible materials without dogmatism.
