"The wind blowing on Palm Sunday will not change anytime soon."

According to this old saying, the wind of Palm Sunday corresponds to the most recurrent wind of the year, and more particularly of the summer. Many are still checking the slightest variations of this day’s wind at a specific time, between 11 am and noon.

Six days before Pesach - tells us the Bible - when Jesus made his arrival in Jerusalem, the crowd acclaimed him by covering the ground with coats and green branches. It is in memory of this day that Catholics nowadays carry branches from different tree species, according to the world region.

In France people use to carry boxwood or laurel boughs. In Provence, however, people prefer the olive tree, a symbol of peace and fertility. If the bay leaf is mostly used in men fragrances for its aromatic, camphoric, and spicy shades, the flower of this tree is preferred in women fragrances for its floral and almond facets.

In Alsace and Germany, people use to carry a mix of branches from boxwood and Katzenpfötchen, a plant with a wooden stem and small fluffy spheres. Boxwood with evergreen leaves is a symbol of immortality and eternity.

In Corsica and Nice, craftsmen called “ramistes” perpetuate the tradition of braided palm leaves and set up their stalls in front of the churches a few days before Palm Sunday. This tradition was imported from neighboring Liguria and more precisely from the town of Bordighera, which had a large palm grove. In the antiquity, the palm tree was a symbol of royalty and later became the attribute of Christian martyrs.
