In this new Masternose episode, the Nose team revisits the foundations of olfactory classification — the system that has structured the entire Nose diagnosis since 2012. Seven families. One logic. One tool.
Where Does the Classification Come From?
In 2012, when the Nose diagnosis was created, the challenge was to map every available fragrance onto a single, coherent framework. The reference chosen: Hermann Reimer's classification system — a recognised perfumery school that our perfumer Marc Buxton himself attended.
The 7 Olfactory Families According to Nose
The Nose classification distinguishes seven main families: Floral, Floriental, Oriental, Chypre, Fougère, Citrus, and Woody. Each groups fragrances with shared structures — a common base, accord, and sensibility. This framework allows the diagnosis to generate precise recommendations, with no guesswork.
