Master of Incense

Nicknamed the “Master of Incense” in the world of perfumery, Bertrand Duchaufour stands out for his unexpected compositions built around this ingredient, which he continually reinterprets.
“Incense was a revelation for me. It’s probably the first scent that ever left a mark on me as a child.”
This deep, personal connection has long fueled his creative process, making incense a signature material in his work. In Avignon by Comme des Garçons, he explores the majestic austerity of Romanesque churches—the mystical density of stone and silence. The sacred breath of incense unfolds, lifted by myrrh, labdanum, chamomile, and aldehydes, in a solemn, enveloping accord. His love of contrast—tension, depth, light—shapes his entire body of work.
“The beauty of perfume is born from imbalance—intimate and constantly sustained.”
This signature contrast is evident in his creations for L’Entropiste, especially Altamura and Dawn Whispers: fragrances where the sacred falters, and incense becomes a substance of chaos or introspection.
A free-flowing, ever-evolving style—like life itself, never still.
