Sacred according to the Egyptians, symbol of victory among the kings of France, the iris flower took the name over the centuries of "fleur de lys". Catherine de' Medici was the first to wear the iris, whose name refers to Iridos, goddess of the rainbow who was the messenger of the good news.

However, its coveted smell doesn’t come from the iridescent petals but rather from it rhizomes and stems. After drying for 3 years, the latter are used to extract the iris butter and then its absolute. The iris pallida and iris germanica, mainly cultivated in Italy, are among the most preferred species. Their accord ranges between powdery and buttery notes, some that are close to the violet, and others which are more woody.
