Arpa, a synesthetic experience
Light and sound can be described as waves and frequencies, ARPA believes this is possible for scents too. The same way light and sound travel through space and change with time can be applied to perfume; the notes that are first smelled are not the same as the last ones. Perfume has before made this relationship when described as chords, shapes and colours. All these are adjectives from other senses, ARPA brought them together to be understood as a reflection of SYNESTHESIA, understanding that the descriptions are accurate because all the senses are connected and the experience is holistic.
Synesthesia is the reaction of the senses to the activation of one of them, A sound that can be felt on the skin, a flavour that becomes visible and a perfume that can be heard. ARPA fragrances come from this systemic concept. The Perfumes can be heard, touched, seen and smelled. For each scent We have developed a set of tokens to enhance and provoke the synesthetic experience of newcomers; A musical piece inspired by the notes of the aromatic components can be heard to amplify the changing aroma through the perfume volatilization. A geographical code and landscape photography allows the scent to bring you on to the space. Each perfume has a frequency photograph to ease the link of sound, light and scent, reinforcing the synesthetic perception of the fragrances. We have commissioned one artist per parfum to translate the aromatic experience onto their plastic language. They have conceived a main sculpture and a set of secondary pieces; This is how Arpa explores the tactile dimension of perfume. All these Tokens together will certainly bring you a synesthetic experience.
ARPA is a synesthetic project looking for people to experience more deep and intense emotions. Perfumery is our language and we have translated it on to other senses to contrast the differences, but mostly make the connections tangible to everyone who would like to walk this sensorial path.
The sensorial dimension has been explored and manifested on the packaging of the fragrances. The Hero bottle designed by Jochen Holz, Is a vibrant colour flask that comes encased on a vegan cast glycerin soap that encapsulates olfactive memories, designed by Brian Thoreen in collaboration with Barnabé Fillion. The translucency frames the bottle as an ancient memory awaiting to be unlocked from its frozen state. The packaging comes with a glass funnel to pass the perfume from the refill bottle on to the Hero, Adding a ritual moment of concentration and ensuring the freshness of the scent.
We are committed to become a sustainable brand for such matters, we reduced the single use plastic as much as possible; The rigid box on which the perfume comes can have its insert easily separated to use the package for keeping cherished items and its book-like construction allows for a beautiful compliment to any bookshelf.
To further add to the diverse thinking and creativity needed to amplify the synesthetic experience, We have separated our Headquarters into research modules. In Paris the sound researchers collaborate directly with our Nose Barnabé Fillion on the exploration of frequencies and soundwaves. From Mexico city we research the shape and form of perfume, the sculpture research team. From Kyoto the researchers dive deep into the ceremonial approaches of incenses and tea. These diversity of locations allow us to explore from a systemic perspective the different layers of perfumery.
